This is Halloween

We had a nice halloween.  Even though school has been in session for two months, I am still not used to feeling like we have so little time between dinner and bedtime to get fun activities done for the holidays.  But we make it work.

We carved pumpkins a few nights ago.  The kids had a great time.

They loved pulling out the guts.

Everett didn't like getting his hands sticky with the juices, but he did like making sure his pumpkin was cleaned out.

The finished products.  We went the easy route this year and used stencils.  They worked out ok, even though we sped through them as fast as we could.

Our city held a "beggar's night" the night before Halloween to ensure that the little children were not out at the same time as the older troublemakers.  I think "beggar's night" is a pretty good name and should always be used interchangeably with the official name of Halloween.

I made hot dog mummies for dinner.  The kids were excited about them but didn't really eat much.  Don't you worry; their bellies were filled with plenty of candy later.

I think they were all excited about their costumes.  William was obviously not keen on wearing his dinosaur hood.

Ashley wanted to be a black cat, which is a perfect fit for her.  I think she often really wishes she was a cat.

She posed several ways without prompting from me.  She was meant for this costume.  I wouldn't be surprised if she wears it again next year.

William originally wanted to be an orange monster but immediately changed his mind when he saw this costume in a store.

He was pretty cute in it and since it was 40% off, I couldn't say no.

I've mentioned before that Everett has been enjoying everything Star Wars.  It did not surprise me that he wanted to be Luke Skywalker this year.

It was a pretty easy costume to make.  It is fun to see him enjoying the persona.

Everett asked for an ewok buddy.  William was not interested, so I recruited James.  He looked adorable and Everett was thrilled.  The main part of this costume was a dog costume I bought four years ago for three dollars.  Two kids wore it before James and I just used leftover scraps to finish it off with the ewok hood and ears.  I don't think you can get more budget-friendly than that!

These two buddies were great together, although their trick-or-treating paces were significantly different.

James loved the whole concept of trick-or-treating and even spoke to most of the people.  He also tried to grab a handful of candy at each house.  When I tried to put all pieces back but one, our neighbors tried to insist that he take it all.  (I didn't listen, but James didn't seem to notice.)  Suddenly I realized how James had gotten more candy than the rest of the kids at our church's trunk-or-treat.  Everett had taken him around to all the cars while I manned ours, and they returned a short time later completely be-laden with candy.

Ashley, Everett and William got plenty of candy as well.  William was done after a handful of houses, and I didn't argue with him.  Less candy in our house means less whining from the kids.  I am still trying to find a dentist in our area who buys the candy back, but I haven't yet been successful.  I figure it is a win-win.  Everett has been dying to earn more money, and I don't want to deal with all the candy.

It was a fun holiday.  We don't know our new neighbors very well, but it was fun to recognize some of their kids.  This is the first year we've ever had a decent amount of trick-or-treaters, and it was a lot of fun!
